Web Development Apprentice / Junior Software Engineer

Do you love sharing programming skills with others? If you’re brimming with empathy for the beginning programmer, a lifelong learner yourself, and interested in making software engineering teams more diverse, we’d love to have you join our team.

Our latest project, Prism Shift, represents challenging the status quo. We strive to build more than just a coding bootcamp for women—we’re creating a communal hub of passionate individuals working collectively toward an equitable future for all. It’s a big endeavor, and one that we can’t do alone, but we’re excited and dreaming big. Come and join us!

Launch Academy is seeking an entry-level software developer to join a small team of like minded engineers to guide our immersive web development program in Washington, DC. We are always tinkering and finding new ways to improve our education. Our agile approach and the changing technical needs of our hiring partners ensure our curriculum and the technologies we teach will remain interesting and exciting.

If you’re just starting out in the software development industry, this is a wonderful opportunity to develop your skills in a welcoming and fostering environment. You’ll spend 90 days in the Boston area learning our approach and curriculum, and then you’ll head to Washington, DC as part of the initial team and inaugural cohort of DC students. This role is permanent and will be based in DC thereafter. At Launch Academy, we hire for aptitude and will qualify the right candidate based on a portfolio of their work.

The Challenge

Traditional education is broken and we are seeking to offer an alternative to people who want to learn the craft of web development.

Gender equality, especially in tech, is an extremely complex issue. It’s no secret that tech is a male-dominated field. It’s also no secret that women want better representation and opportunity in software engineering careers. So we put a stake in the ground: to fight for equitable representation, respect, and pay in tech.

We've graduated and placed over 600 people to date, 151 which identify as women, but we have a long way to go to make a substantial impact.

The Role

  • Mentor students in small groups and one-on-one settings
  • Directly aid students through the process of learning web development
  • Develop internal education software
  • Introduce new material to the class via facilitations and small clinics

What We're Looking For

  • Teaching experience is a definite plus but a willingness to learn how to become a better educator is a requirement.
  • Patience and empathy are qualities equally as important as technical prowess.
  • Demonstrated experience with an object oriented programming language.
  • A desire to help others.
  • An interest in developing mentoring, instructional, and communication skills in a technical environment.
